The Heritage Foundation Releases Commentary on the Final Presidential Debate

By Billy Hallowell, VoterWatch

While the first two presidential debates were completely inadequate in terms of providing valuable information about candidate stances, the final debate was more open in terms of scope and communication.  While still not subscribing to the recommendations that The Open Debate Coalition laid out, the final debate did provide a more informative forum.

While we are happy to have Dick Morris and our “regulars” on board for this final debate, we are even more excited to announce that The Heritage Foundation and Reason Magazine have decided to participate in our final installment of the 2008 Presidential Debates Project.

Rob Bluey of The Heritage Foundation did an amazing job inserting commentary using the VoterWatch media player.  Bluey brings a robust presentation of thought and perspective to the best debate of the bunch.  I’m sure you’ll find the resulting product intriguing.  Also, be sure to see the annotation posted on the Heritage site as well as Bluey’s piece about VoterWatch and the player on K Street Cafe.  Or, to simply view the commentary, click the image below:

Current TV and Twitter “Hack’d the Debate”!

By Billy Hallowell

DON’T forget to check out Dick Morris’ commentary — extremely interesting.  But this post is about a very cool collaboration that’s been forged (and not about specific commentators).  A few days ago, I wrote about Current/Twitter’s new electoral relationship.  Their very cool “Hack the Debates” initiative kicked off last night and VoterWatch was there to participate.  VoterWatch Twitted comments about the presidential debate on behalf of the Bob Barr for President Team, CovertRadio and other Presidential Debates Project partners.  If you aren’t familiar with Twitter, be sure to check it out.

While Current didn’t sign on to annotate the debates using our player, we joined forces with them to disseminate information about their project as well as a link to their recap of what went down during last night’s debate.  Check out what happens when television and Twitter mix.

What’s the Deal With Friday’s Debate?

Call it political posturing or call it country first, but John McCain’s call to postpone this Friday’s presidential debate is definitely newsworthy.  CNN reports McCain’s words as follows:

“I cannot carry on a campaign as though this dangerous situation had not occurred, or as though a solution were at hand, which it clearly is not,” McCain said in New York. “With so much on the line, for America and the world, the debate that matters most right now is taking place in the United States Capitol. I intend to join it.”

Of course, this would postpone many of the excellent new media projects that are going on surrounding the debates.  Either way, we’ll be adjusting our schedule to reflect the candidates’ decisions (so stay tuned).  No matter where you stand on McCain’s proclamation, one thing is for certain: this electoral season keeps throwing curve balls at the American electorate!
